This is to inform you that FR. ROBERT C. HOGAN, S. J. died early this morning in the Jesuit Health and Wellness Center, Quezon City. Fr. Bob, 88, had been in decline for some time and passed away in his sleep.  He entered the Society in 1951 and was ordained to the presbyterate in 1964.

In view of pandemic considerations, Fr. Bob’s remains will be cremated and the ashes brought to Loyola House of Studies for in-house memorial Masses there and in other communities on campus.  They will then be kept in the Jesuit Health and Wellness Center until a proper funeral Mass and inurnment in the Province cemetery at Sacred Heart Novitiate can be scheduled. Requiescat in pace.

Fr. Bob the Intellectual
(Taken from essay “Centro of Attractions”)

Theology professor Father Robert Hogan told us to watch Logan’s Run at Emily cinema. Did so with Sabas Mabulo. The Jesuit had us discuss critical reflections on what happens when people blindingly follow their leaders or are enslaved by systems and technology.

Fr. Bob the Playful
From the essay “Not that Close to the Bone”

“For all the perceived professorial strictness some labeled Father Bob Hogan, he was fun. Aimed a camera at him before leaving for the U. S. in 1980 as he craned out, grinned, and stuck his tongue out. Was conversing with him one September with Jun Alferez when sweaty Father Treasurer Fred Martinez arrived. He watched the fiesta’s parade, notably, he added, slender miniskirted majorettes. ‘Aha!’ finger-wagging Father Bob delightfully exclaimed, ‘That is why you sweat!’ “

Father Bob’s family and mine grew up together in the 40’s and 50’s back in Jackson Heights, Queens, New York. So many wonderful memories of that time. Father Bob’s family was so proud of all the wonderful work he did dedicating his life to the people of the Philippines. May he rest in peace.
