Fr. Viray is New Provincial of the Philippine Jesuits

August 19, 2017

Rev. Fr. Arturo Sosa, SJ, the Superior General of the Society of Jesus, has appointed Fr. Primitivo E. Viray, Jr., SJ as 12th Provincial of the Philippine Province in the post-Restoration period. Fr. Jun Viray assumes office on 17 November 2017.

Fr. Jun Viray, 56, did basic education at Sacred Heart School for Boys, Cebu and obtained a B.S. in Business Economics at the University of the Philippines before entering the Society in 1984. As a Jesuit he added an M.A. in Rural Development Studies (1998) at the University of East Anglia, Norwich, U.K., as well as a doctorate in Development Studies in 2003.

Fr. Jun has had a wide range of apostolic engagements. He was Asst. Director and later Director of the Prenovitiate program in both Haggerty Hall and Arvisu House (1989-1991;1992-1994). Ordained to the priesthood in 1995, he served as Asst. Parish Priest/Parish Priest in Ipil, Zamboanga Sibugay. He then taught Economics at Ateneo de Zamboanga University, where he became Local Superior and, from 2006-2009, was Delegate of Regents. After Zamboanga, Fr. Jun was Rector of Loyola House of Studies, functioning too as Delegate for Formation and Vice-Superior of the Theologians subcommunity. In 2011, he was elected President of Ateneo de Naga University and made Superior of the Jesuits in Naga. Currently, he is President of AdNU and Chair of the Jesuit Higher Education Commission.

Let us all continue to pray for Fr. Viray and the Province! #AMDG

Fr. Jun Viray was my classmate in Loyola School of Theology. He impressed me as a vey intelligent but humble Jesuit. Now, appointed as the new Provincial Superior of the Society of Jesus, he will surely be an asset during this time of national moral challenge. Fr. Jun, may the Good Shepherd guide you as you lead your Society in the Philippines.

Fr. Jun is a Jesuit who is not afraid to take a position on certain social and political issues. Ateneo de Naga, as an educational institution, is in the forefront of criticizing certain policies of the current government, like its policy on EJKs and the burial of the dictator Marcos, because of the leadership of Fr. Jun. The Holy Spirit must have really worked hard in making him the next provincial of the Philippine Jesuits. Let’s pray for Fr. Jun.

Good morning.
Just wondering if the Fr.Provincial has supervision over all Jesuit institutions and has a say in the appointment of leaders in all Jesuit schools.

The Provincial is normally part of the board of trustees (composed of Jesuit and lay partners) of our institutions. With the approval of the Board, he appoints the president or executive director of Jesuit schools.
