From the memo of
Ateneo de Davao University President Fr. Antonio Samson, SJ...

It is with sadness that I inform the University community that Fr. Rodolfo A. Malasmas, SJ peacefully passed away in the Lord in the early evening of 11 July. He had suffered a massive heart attack in the early morning of 03 July; he remained in a coma until death.

His remains are being waked at the University Chapel of Our Lady of the Assumption. There will be daily evening Masses at eight o'clock. The funeral Mass will be at eight o'clock in the morning of Thursday, 15 July, followed by burial at the Davao Catholic Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations to an Ateneo de Davao University (ADDU) Scholarship Fund in honor and in memory of Fr. Malasmas will be greatly appreciated . Donations may be sent to the Rector of the Jesuit Community or to the President's office.

At his death, Fr. Malasmas was 86 years of age (born on 27 June 1924), 69 years a Jesuit (entered the Society of Jesus on 30 May 1941) and 56 years a priest (ordained a priest on 19 June 1954).

Except for the years from 1962 to 1975, his assignments have all been at Ateneo de Davao. As a Jesuit scholastic in the High School, he was a member of the founding Jesuit community of Ateneo de Davao (1948-51). Returning after ordination (1956-62), he held various positions (Dean of Men in the College, College Dean, and professor of English, Philosophy, and Theology). From 1976 until his death, he served the ADDU as Grade School Headmaster, High School Supervisor at Compostela Annex, Assistant University Chaplain, and as an important part of various social work initiatives.

From 1962-64, he was House Minister and Juniorate teacher at Sacred Heart Novitiate, Novaliches, Quezon City; from 1964-75, he was Grade School headmaster at Ateneo de Manila University.

May his soul rest in God's peace.

The more than 300 men of the Philippine Province of the Society of Jesus serve in five universities, numerous schools for basic education, two diocesan major seminaries, three urban and five rural parishes, four retreat houses, and a variety of centers for spirituality, social action, communication, and socio-pastoral services. In addition, we have Jesuits serving in the foreign missions, in Cambodia, China, and East Timor.

None of these ministries can continue without the generous help of benefactors like you. Your gifts truly keep us going. They free us to serve wherever the need is greatest, here or abroad; they support our ministries, enable us to educate new laborers and sustain care for those worn out in service.

Our financial resources are diminishing even as demands of service to the Church grow. For this reason, I am forced to turn again and beg from you who have so often been our partners in ministry. If you can, please make a tax-deductible contribution to support our efforts.
